Millfoods Company has signed a contract with Iberdrola México for the supply of 100% renewable electricity, aimed at powering its new non-genetically modified corn processing plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato.

"We are delighted to strengthen ties with Millfoods, with whom we share the goal of reducing polluting emissions through clean energy. With this 100% renewable electricity supply contract, we ally ourselves for a greener and more sustainable world," said Katya Somohano, CEO of Iberdrola México.

The new plant is considered the largest corn processing plant in the world. This electricity supply contract will prevent the annual emission of 30,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, equivalent to the annual circulation of about 6,500 vehicles or the carbon captured by more than 480,000 trees. Additionally, the agreement includes the acquisition of IRECs (International Renewable Energy Certificates), ensuring that the contracted energy is entirely renewable because it is linked to the generation of some of Iberdrola México's wind and photovoltaic plants. "This long-term agreement we are initiating with Iberdrola México brings us closer to our goal of carbon neutrality and reaffirms our commitment to sustainability and the environment," said Pilar Gutiérrez, CEO of Millfoods, a subsidiary of AMMI.

The non-genetically modified corn processing plant is scheduled to start operating in August, and its products will be primarily used for beer production, as well as for flour processing for human and animal consumption, sourcing inputs from over 20,000 local producers in the Bajío region. With an investment of $300 million and a capacity to process one million tons, it is considered the most advanced in the region and the largest in the world.
