In an unprecedented move toward green industrialisation, President Nangolo Mbumba inaugurated the Hyphen project, placing Namibia at the forefront of African nations committed to sustainable development. This momentous occasion witnessed the erection of 10 meteorological masts (MetMasts), each towering at 120 meters, across the country. These MetMasts, adorned with advanced technology, stand as a testament to Namibia's dedication to harnessing renewable energy resources and mitigating environmental impacts.
The Hyphen project, spearheaded by the Namibian government, in collaboration with international environmental and technological partners, aims to collect comprehensive data on wind, temperature, humidity, solar irradiation, and other critical atmospheric parameters. Such detailed environmental monitoring is pivotal for the strategic development of renewable energy projects, particularly wind and solar power initiatives, which are central to Namibia’s green industrialisation agenda.
A noteworthy innovation in some of these MetMasts is the integration of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. This addition is designed to meticulously monitor bat and bird activity in the vicinity of the masts, showcasing Namibia's commitment to not only advancing its energy sector but doing so in a manner that is mindful of biodiversity and wildlife conservation.
