Zambian company GEI Power, specializing in sustainable energy, has partnered with Turkish firm YEO to construct Zambia’s first photovoltaic solar power plant with battery energy storage, valued at approximately $65 million.

Scheduled to begin commercial operation in September 2025, the project boasts an installed production capacity of 60 MWp and a storage capacity of 20 MWh, as confirmed by the Zambian Ministry of Energy.

Ignatius Anayawa, Managing Director of GEI Power, highlighted the successful completion of preliminary activities, including comprehensive feasibility studies that demonstrate the project's viability to help bridge Zambia's energy gap. It is projected to supply electricity to over 65,000 households and will create jobs for 150 local workers during the construction phase, with an additional 50 seasonal positions upon commissioning.

This initiative is a cornerstone of Zambia's strategy to improve electricity access, increasingly relying on partnerships with the private sector to launch grid-connected solar ventures.
