Colombia’s Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME) announced that the country's solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity has now reached 1,193 MW. This milestone was achieved recently with the addition of two major solar projects, pushing the nation past the 1 GW mark.
The recent surge in capacity is largely due to Enel Colombia, the local subsidiary of Italy’s Enel, commissioning 240 MW of new solar power. This includes the La Loma plant, with a capacity of 150 MW, located in the Cesar Department, and the Fundación plant, with 90 MW, in the Magdalena Department, both situated in northern Colombia.
According to UPME, another 637.08 MW of solar and wind projects are nearing commercial operation. Colombia's goal is to expand its renewable energy capacity to 6 GW by 2026. The International Renewable Energy Agency reported that Colombia had 457 MW of installed PV capacity by the end of 2022, increasing to 952 MW by the end of 2023.
