Turning Over a Green Leaf in Bosnia’s Industrial Story
Picture this: Bosnia and Herzegovina, a country with a deep-rooted history in heavy industry, is now stepping into a brighter, greener future. Leading this charge is Alumina, the country’s biggest exporter, known for producing essential materials like alumina and zeolites, crucial for aluminium and cement. But here’s the twist—they’re not just sticking to the old ways. Alumina is investing a whopping BAM 16 million (about EUR 8.2 million) into solar power. Yes, you read that right—solar power, in an industry typically fueled by fossil fuels and electricity from the grid.
The Numbers That Matter: 16 MW of Pure Solar Energy
So, what does this solar shift look like? Imagine a sprawling 10-hectare field at their Boksit factory, not with crops, but with solar panels soaking up the sun.
Alumina is going big—16 MW big. To put that into perspective, this solar capacity is expected to generate approximately 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually. That’s about 12% of their total energy needs, enough to significantly cut their reliance on the grid. Instead of being fully dependent on external electricity, they’ll now be able to operate a significant portion of their production using the power they generate themselves.
The Green Transformation: Why Pay for What the Sun gives for Free?
For the first time since their founding, they’ll be able to run part of the year without buying electricity from the grid. And here’s the best part: it’s all part of a larger green energy program aimed at slashing CO2 emissions.
A Solar Journey: From Humble Beginnings to Major Impact
Two years ago, Alumina dipped its toes into solar with a modest 800 kW plant. Fast forward, and now they’re gearing up with 16 MW of solar power spread across their facilities. They’ve already installed 700 kWp at their Metalno site, complete with a substation to support this solar surge. It’s like watching a small spark grow into a blazing solar-powered fire—one that’s illuminating the path for others in the industry.
Looking Ahead: Could This Ignite a Green Revolution?
So here’s the lingering question: If Alumina can pull this off, what’s stopping other heavy industries in Bosnia from doing the same? Could this be the start of something bigger—a green wave sweeping through the industrial sector? Alumina is setting the stage, and the spotlight is on them.
