Renewable energy company ACWA Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the government of Tunisia to advance green hydrogen production in the North African country. The agreement was signed by Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, and Marco Arcelli, CEO of ACWA Power.
The partnership aims to produce 600,000 tons of green hydrogen annually through a three-phase approach for export to Europe. As part of this initiative, ACWA Power will develop 12 GW of renewable energy units, including storage systems, transmission lines, a water desalination plant, and electrolyzers. The initial phase is set to generate 200,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, to be exported via the SoutH2 Corridor—a planned hydrogen pipeline connecting Tunisia to Italy, Austria, and Germany.
Tunisia's green hydrogen strategy targets an annual production of 8.3 million tons by 2050. This ambitious project involves the installation of 4 GW of renewable energy units and 2 GW of electrolyzer capacity. The collaboration is expected to leverage Tunisia's strategic geographic location, existing infrastructure, and skilled workforce to create a more sustainable future for the country.

"This project can also contribute significantly to economic growth, job creation, and sustainable energy solutions, exemplifying our shared vision for a greener future," added Arcelli.
The development of green hydrogen in Tunisia aligns with the nation's long-term energy goals and represents a significant step towards achieving sustainability and energy independence. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in the global transition to renewable energy, positioning Tunisia as a key player in the green hydrogen market.
