Interview With Siemens’ Business Unit Manager, Gonzalo Josa Scorza

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH:

Siemens is a technology company with a diverse focus, including industry, infrastructure, and systems. How does Siemens contribute to the lithium industry, and what technological solutions does the company offer to support the sector’s growth in Argentina and Latin America?

At Siemens, we provide systems, infrastructure, equipment, and specialized expertise to enable our clients to advance in digital transformation securely, stably, seamlessly, and resiliently throughout the value chain. This involves adapting products, processes, and strategies based on three fundamental pillars: increasing flexibility, productivity, and time to market.

Argentina, forming the “Lithium Triangle” with Bolivia and Chile, possesses significant lithium reserves. Our country represents 8% of global production and 25% of global resources. As a crucial resource for the energy transition, Siemens aids lithium companies in improving productivity, achieving energy efficiency, and reducing carbon footprint through electrification, automation, and digitalization. Our specialized teams are spread across the country, allowing us to operate in areas where our clients need us.

In the context of more resource-efficient factories and resilient supply chains, how does Siemens envision its technologies facilitating more sustainable and efficient lithium production processes?

We continuously work with our clients to redefine the meaning of productivity and operating methods. With our local expertise, we provide advice, support, and co-create solutions with our clients to facilitate their journey through digital transformation, building a sustainable future and combating the threat of climate change. Siemens’ equipment and platforms are designed to communicate, creating new synergies between hardware, software, and data, enabling resource optimization and implementing new levels of flexibility in operations. The ability to harness data through analytics allows the creation of innovative IIoT solutions, improving production processes and ensuring efficient plant operation through predictive maintenance.

Siemens is known for creating technology with a purpose. How does the company ensure that its innovations align with the objectives of the lithium industry, especially in terms of sustainability and environmental impact?

We create technology with a purpose to transform industries and infrastructures and address the world’s most critical issues. Sustainability is at the core of our business activities, based on integrity, transparency, and responsibility. It guides our practices, risk management approach, and technological contribution to climate protection, resource conservation, and product safety for the benefit of future generations. To elevate our ESG commitment, we have introduced the DEGREE Framework, encompassing Decarbonization, Ethics, Corporate Governance, Resource Efficiency, Equity, and Employability. This 360-degree approach addresses all stakeholders: clients, suppliers, investors, employees, societies we serve, and the planet. By addressing all aspects of ESG, we are building a better future, fostering a culture of trust, empowerment, and growth, supporting inclusive economic opportunities and ensuring resilience and relevance for our people and businesses in the future.

Siemens empowers its clients to transform industries by combining the real and digital worlds. How does this approach translate into solutions to optimize operations and processes within the lithium value chain?

The “digital twin” plays a fundamental role in research and development stages, industrial-scale production processes, providing answers for continuous improvement, predictive maintenance, cost reduction, disruption prevention, and ongoing operational efficiency optimization. In line with our strategy of creating technology with a purpose, we have formed an alliance to expand collaboration between Siemens and NVIDIA, enabling the industrial metaverse and increasing the use of AI-driven digital twins. In the same vein, we have established a strategic alliance with Microsoft for better utilization of AI in industrial environments. Undoubtedly, these joint ventures will help drive and develop operational excellence on a larger scale.

As a participant, what are Siemens‘ expectations regarding networking, collaboration, and potential partnerships with other key players in the lithium industry in Argentina and Latin America during the summit?

Siemens has extensive experience in developing integrated value chains to address the various challenges presented by the lithium industry, from extraction processes to operational and productive aspects of mineral derivatives. This work is carried out in collaboration with our clients, maintaining sustainability standards in each of their processes, in addition to complying with local and international regulations applicable to the industry. The Summit is a great opportunity to showcase our experience in both local and international markets, providing assurance to our clients and potential partners that Siemens’ process integration is possible throughout the entire lifecycle of their operations.
