In a bid to strengthen South America’s energy transition, Colombia led the Second Meeting of Energy Vice Ministers under the Brasilia Consensus on 2 December 2024. As the pro tempore president of the regional mechanism, Colombia spearheaded discussions on key topics, including electric interconnection, gas integration, and regional energy planning. These priorities aim to boost energy security, sustainability, and collaboration across the continent.
The event brought together energy authorities and experts from across South America to address pressing issues such as regulatory harmonisation for electricity interconnection and enhancing energy infrastructure. Discussions also emphasised data-driven regional energy planning to tackle challenges posed by climate change.
Margarita Manjarrez, Colombia’s Director of Regional Coordination and Integration Mechanisms at the Foreign Ministry, reaffirmed the country's commitment to fostering both electric and gas interconnection. This approach, she highlighted, is crucial for enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability in the region. Colombian Minister of Mines and Energy also stressed the need for robust data systems to support informed decisions in a rapidly changing climate.
Key outcomes of the meeting included action plans to strengthen regional cooperation and information sharing. The Latin American Energy Organisation (OLADE) presented technical reports to guide energy policies among member countries. A significant milestone was the unveiling of an advanced data integration platform developed in collaboration with Colombia’s Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME). The platform incorporates electrical, climatic, and hydrological data, enabling nations to better address climate and supply challenges.
Supported by the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) and OLADE, the event demonstrated Colombia’s leadership in championing a collaborative, inclusive, and sustainable energy transition for South America. It marked a critical step towards greater regional energy integration and a unified vision for a greener future.
