Argentina is making significant strides in its renewable energy transition, enhancing its energy matrix with new wind and solar plants. In the third quarter of 2024, the country added 216.5 MW of capacity to the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI), strengthening its commitment to sustainable energy and setting new benchmarks for clean power generation.

This progress, driven by the Renewable Energy Promotion Regime, positions Argentina as a leader in Latin America’s energy transition, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while meeting international climate commitments.

Major Renewable Energy Developments

The latest additions to Argentina’s energy matrix highlight the nation’s growing renewable capacity:

  • General Levalle I (Córdoba): A wind farm contributing 62 MW.
  • Pampa Energía VI (Buenos Aires): A wind farm adding 94.5 MW.
  • 360 Energy Solar Plant (La Rioja): A solar facility generating 60 MW.

With these developments, Argentina’s total renewable energy capacity now stands at 6,206 MW, sufficient to power more than six million households. Notably, on 15 September 2024, renewables covered 36.61% of the country’s instantaneous electricity demand, setting a new record.

Corrientes: A Biomass Powerhouse

The province of Corrientes is leading in biomass energy production, showcasing an innovative approach to sustainable energy:

  • FRESA Plant (Gobernador Virasoro): Operational since 2020, it generates 40 MW using forest waste, with 36 MW feeding the national grid. A $100 million investment will double capacity with the San Alonso Thermal Plant by 2025, creating 600 construction jobs and 150 operational roles.
  • Genergiabio Plant (Santa Rosa): Producing 18 MW from 737 tonnes of daily forest residues, this project reduces environmental impact by avoiding open burning and promoting circular economy principles.

These biomass initiatives not only enhance Argentina’s clean energy output but also drive economic growth, create local jobs, and support regional sustainability.

A Broader Impact: Economic and Environmental Benefits

The expansion of Argentina’s renewable energy sector delivers far-reaching benefits:

  1. Economic Growth: Projects like the FRESA expansion bring significant employment opportunities and bolster local supply chains.
  2. Environmental Sustainability: By reusing industrial by-products and reducing emissions, Argentina supports its climate goals and international commitments.
  3. Energy Independence: Increasing renewable capacity diversifies the energy matrix, making the system more resilient and less dependent on fossil fuels.

Argentina’s renewable energy advancements exemplify the country’s potential to lead in sustainable energy innovation. By fostering clear policies, leveraging its natural resources, and investing in projects that deliver social and environmental benefits, Argentina is building a cleaner, more efficient energy future.
