Germany and Morocco have entered into a strategic alliance on climate and energy to bolster cooperation in renewable energy installations and hydrogen production in the North African nation.

Morocco, renowned for its favorable conditions for solar and wind power generation, is set to play a pivotal role in the production of green hydrogen, essential for Germany’s ambitious climate goals. The agreement, signed on Friday in Berlin, marks a significant step towards securing future hydrogen supplies and reducing emissions from industries heavily reliant on natural gas.

"Morocco has excellent conditions to host solar and wind power generation capacity and to produce green hydrogen," highlighted joint statements from Germany’s Development and Economy Ministries.

The pact underscores Germany’s commitment to importing hydrogen sustainably, aiming to foster a fair partnership that supports Morocco’s energy transition while ensuring its participation in the clean energy supply chain.

"We want to import hydrogen, but we want to do this fairly and in partnership, namely in such a way that Morocco can also drive forward its energy transition and get its fair share of the value chains of the future," stated Svenja Schulze, Germany’s Development Minister.

The collaboration includes plans to advance the hydrogen economy and provide political support for German technology companies and suppliers looking to contribute to Morocco’s renewable energy initiatives.

Earlier this year, Morocco announced initiatives to attract green hydrogen investments, dedicating 1 million hectares of public land to related projects. With abundant sunlight year-round, Morocco has emerged as a significant producer of solar power and aims to meet 52% of its electricity needs from renewables by 2030.

Germany, meanwhile, is expediting hydrogen project developments by streamlining permitting and environmental checks for production, storage, and transportation infrastructure.

The partnership signals a strategic alignment between Germany's industrial needs and Morocco's renewable energy ambitions, positioning both countries as key players in the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
